Methods

Two methods of cleaning carpets and upholstery are used by me. One is pad cleaning. The other is spray extraction. Both methods are often used together and are preceded by an
inspection, powerful vacuuming, and removal of certain spots and stains.

Pad Cleaning

The item is moistened with a non-residual cleaning fluid formulated for the purpose. For carpets, a machine is  used to rotate a specially constructed circular pad, picking up dirt from the surface and immediately below it. For maximum effectiveness, the pads are frequently replaced by fresh ones.

Due to gentle agitation, this method is amazingly effective and quiet. It usually dries the item being cleaned in less than an hour. It is ideal for items of light soiling.  Areas of heavier or deeper soiling such as spilled drinks, and fabrics of certain constructions will be dealt with by spray extraction - see below.

Spray Extraction

This has sometimes been incorrectly called steam cleaning. The item to be cleaned is first treated with a pre-conditioning solution which is agitated by brushing it into the pile or fabric. This softens up the soil in the item.

The spray extraction machine has a "fresh" tank of hot rinsing agent to flush out the
pre-conditioning solution together with the softened soil. This is done by drawing a wand (suction tube) ,or a hand tool, across the item. As this is done, the fresh rinsing solution is finely sprayed into the item, and instantly vacuumed up into the machine's "waste" tank,
thus avoiding over-wetting. The process is continued with overlapping strokes.

Spray Extraction cleaning is best for cleaning moderately soiled carpets and  upholstery, but not leather which is cleaned by a form of pad and brush cleaning.

Spots and stains

These usually require application of specialist chemicals followed by extraction rinsing. Some stains come out with ease, some require time and dogged determination, and a few simply
refuse to budge at all.
